# Color management and HDR

Input processing changes the picture measured by every scope. Source preview modes change how that picture is displayed without changing the measurements. Keep this distinction in mind when comparing log, SDR and HDR signals.

## Signal scale and range

Open input settings with the sliders beside the source selector. **Scale Type** offers Off, IRE, Percentage, 8-bit, 10-bit, PQ ST 2084 and HLG scales. Choosing a 10-bit scale does not make an 8-bit input into a 10-bit signal. PQ ST 2084 and HLG label the Waveform in nits. Scale Type is saved per source; a single Waveform can use a different scale with [Scale Override](/nobe-omniscope-for-ipad/scopes.md#configure-a-waveform).

Review **Scale video range to full** and **Show legal range** against the actual source format. Avoid expanding levels twice if the sender or capture path has already expanded them.

## Interpret and convert an input signal

In input settings, tap **More Input Settings** to open the **Advanced Input Settings** sheet, then use **Input Interpretation**, **Display Conversion** and **Signal Conversion**:

<figure><img src="https://565437294-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MFqn5MuayPgQPMZ9pwf%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-d3081eb873c257b38047b8e501d275f089e4f8c5%2Fomniscope-ipad-advanced-input-settings.png?alt=media" alt="Advanced Input Settings sheet with Input Gamma, Input Color Space, Color-Managed Source Preview enabled, Convert Signal &#x26; Scopes to Rec.709, Tone Mapping and Preserve Saturation"><figcaption><p>Advanced Input Settings. Here the input is interpreted as Rec. 709 and only the Source Signal preview is color-managed; scope measurements are unchanged.</p></figcaption></figure>

1. Match **Input Gamma** and **Input Color Space** to the incoming signal, or to the output of an enabled input LUT.
2. To change only the Source Signal display, enable **Color-Managed Source Preview**. Scope measurements, False Color and color pins retain the original signal values.
3. To convert the working signal measured by every scope, enable **Convert Signal & Scopes to Rec.709**.
4. Enable **Expand Video Levels Before Log Decoding** only when that expansion is appropriate for the encoded source.
5. Choose whether to use **Tone Mapping**, **Preserve Saturation** and **Gamut Compression**.

Input interpretation alone does not change pixels. The preview conversion maps Source Signal to the iPad's sRGB display encoding without changing measurements. The signal conversion changes the picture measured by every scope to the Rec. 709 camera curve and primaries. The two conversion modes cannot be enabled together. These controls do not enable log recording or a new capture format on the camera.

| Control | Effect |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Tone Mapping | Compresses bright values into the output range |
| Preserve Saturation | Uses luminance-based mapping to preserve color ratios during tone mapping |
| Gamut Compression | Brings out-of-gamut colors toward Rec. 709 |

Leave tone mapping and gamut compression off when you need to inspect an uncompressed conversion.

### Supported input gamma curves

Rec.709 camera curve; Gamma 2.2; Gamma 2.4; Gamma 2.6; ACEScc; ACEScct; Apple Log; ARRI LogC3 (EI 800); ARRI LogC4; Blackmagic Film Gen 5; Canon CLog2; Canon CLog3; Cineon; DaVinci Intermediate; DJI D-Log; Fujifilm F-Log; Fujifilm F-Log2; GoPro Protune; Leica L-Log; Nikon N-Log; Panasonic V-Log; RED Log3G10; Sony S-Log2; Sony S-Log3.

### Supported input color spaces

Rec. 709 / sRGB; Rec. 2020; P3-D65 / Display P3 primaries; P3-DCI (DCI white); ACES AP0; ACES AP1; ARRI Wide Gamut 3; ARRI Wide Gamut 4; Blackmagic Film Gen 5 Wide Gamut; Canon Cinema Gamut; DaVinci Wide Gamut; Fujifilm F-Gamut C; Panasonic V-Gamut; RED Wide Gamut; Sony S-Gamut3.Cine; Sony S-Gamut3; Sony Venice S-Gamut3.Cine; Sony Venice S-Gamut3.

Gamma and gamut are separate settings: select the correct pair rather than relying only on the camera manufacturer's name. **Rec.709 camera curve** is not Gamma 2.4; cinema P3-DCI normally uses Gamma 2.6.

## Import an input LUT

Open **Input LUT** and select **Import LUT…**. Choose a 3D `.cube` LUT from Files, iCloud Drive or a connected drive. LUT sizes up to 65³ with the standard 0–1 input domain are supported. A copy is saved for the source.

Use **Enable Input LUT** to compare with bypass, **Replace LUT…** to change it, or **Remove Input LUT** to clear the selection. An invalid import reports an error and preserves the previous selection.

The input LUT runs **before Camera Color Management**. With a log-to-Rec. 709 LUT, leave camera conversion off unless that LUT explicitly requires another conversion afterward. Both affect every scope's measured values.

## Raw, SDR and HDR source preview

When the source is identified as PQ or HLG, Source Signal offers **Raw**, **SDR** and **HDR**:

| Mode | Display behavior |
| ---- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Raw | Displays encoded values without HDR preview mapping; this is not camera RAW decoding |
| SDR | Maps HDR highlights to standard display brightness |
| HDR | Uses the screen's available HDR brightness |

In **Preferences → Source Preview**, choose a mode for all Source Signal viewers. Individual viewers can use different modes; the master setting then shows **Mixed**.

Preview mapping leaves scope measurements unchanged. Input LUTs and camera-color transforms bypass this automatic HDR mapping. If the preview control is missing, check whether the source is being identified as PQ or HLG.

HDR appearance depends on the iPad display and available brightness. Selecting HDR does not give every iPad the same peak brightness or reference-monitor behavior. For consistent visual comparisons, keep display brightness and adaptive display settings consistent.
